The Collect:
Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
-or-
Merciful God of peace, your word, spoken by the prophets, restores your people’s life and hope. Fill our hearts with the joy of your saving grace, that we may hold fast to your great goodness and in our lives proclaim your justice in all the world. Amen.
The Old Testament Lesson:
Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 KJV
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
4Â And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
8 For I the Lord love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
The Psalm:
Psalm 126 KJV
When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion,*
we were like them that dream.
2Â Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing:*
then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.
3 The Lord hath done great things for us;*
whereof we are glad.
4Â Turn again our captivity, OÂ Lord,*
as the streams in the south.
5Â They that sow in tears*
shall reap in joy.
6Â He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed,*
shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
The Epistle:
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 KJV
16Â Rejoice evermore.
17Â Pray without ceasing.
18Â In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19Â Quench not the Spirit.
20Â Despise not prophesyings.
21Â Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22Â Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23Â And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24Â Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
The Gospel:
John 1:6-8, 19-28 KJV
6Â There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7Â The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8Â He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
19Â And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
20Â And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
21Â And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
22Â Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23Â He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
24Â And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
25Â And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
26Â John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27Â He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
28Â These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
